An internet hoax called the Wave, convinces people to place their $500 dollar iPhone 6 in the microwave, effectively reducing both machines to smoking rubble. The well designed hoax, which only appears to be from Apple, defies common sense and reads In part:
“Wave is our latest and greatest addition to iOS8. Wave allows your device to be charged wirelessly through microwave frequencies. Wave can be used to quickly charge your device’s battery using any standard household microwave.”
The ad goes on to say that microwave technology provides a speed charge for your new phone in just 30 seconds!
Surely no one would place their treasured phone in a microwave – right? Wrong. Perhaps you’ve noticed the warning on your microwave which says ‘do not place metal in microwave’ – just ignore it, and bake your phone!
The smoking ruin(s) pictured, are the result of just one such speed charging attempt posted by an unhappy iPhone 6 user.
Beneath the picture posted is written::
“@Name edited: Omgggg that wave thing for iOS 8 just blew my microwave up (unhappy emojis)”
Another trendsetter reported:
“USE WAVE THEY SAID. IT’LL CHARGE YOUR IPHONE IN THE MICROWAVE THEY SAID.” (crying emojis)
The Wave troll has been so successful that the LAPD has issued a warning that the microwave speed charge is a hoax, and further admonishing people not to microwave their phones. Some things just seem to be a given. With the proper APP perhaps you can make microwave popcorn with your iPhone 6? Another variation is the water treatment. Some users have placed their phones in a bucket of water before placing them into the microwave. Perhaps we need a worldwide SNOPES Awareness week?
If you still believe that everything you read on the internet is true, I have a friend in Nigeria who somehow knows you are an upstanding person of the finest morals and standing in the community. He wants to make you wealthy beyond your wildest dreams, if you’ll do him a little favor.
