Last Week Tonight John Oliver: Tobacco Company Bullies

John Oliver explains how tobacco industry regulations and marketing restrictions in the US have caused smoking rates to drop dramatically, while business has never been better overseas! If you thought you knew how unscrupulous tobacco companies could be, prepare to be shocked. John takes us on a world tour, where tobacco companies use thug-like actions and lawsuits to force small  countries to use their products which have fallen out of favor here in the U.S..

Anti-smoking campaigns have been wildly successful in the U.S. especially since advertising has been curtailed. The Marlboro Man and Joe Camel have ridden into the sunset. It happened just when we had five billion dollars in Camel Cash saved up – enough to buy that Hawaiian dream house with oxygen outlets in every room!
I must say Australia had THE most discouraging cigarette warning packs I can imagine – they’re the stuff of nightmares. Yet, we all know that real smoker in denial will refuse to look upon the diseased lung, cancerous eyeball and other rotting body parts with which Australia decorated their packs. You, dear viewer will be caught unawares!

John takes you through the entire disgusting mess world-wide. Just as he has done with other worthwhile causes like Net Neutrality, he issues a call to action. By the way, Net Neutrality was so successful the FCC’s site crashed from the overwhelming traffic!

Move over Marlboro Man, John’s staff have created Jeff the Diseased Lung. His  booted and hat- wearing image  is already on T-shirts in Togo and Uruguay – but we can do so much more!  Go to #JEFFWECAN, and tell Marlboro that they’re welcome to use Jeff the Diseased Lung.   If Marlboro is reluctant, there is still something we can do. In fact, you can probably just skip to this step. Help make Jeff the most seen image in Marlboro’s google search.
We Can DO This!
