Stephen Colbert, the Charlie Daniels Wilford Brimley NRA ad

Stephen Colbert, the Charlie Daniels Wilford Brimley NRA adThat line at Golden Coral is more full of fat old white men than an NRA convention.

The Devil went down to Louisville and won the day. Here are the lyrics to the song, this is how gun enthusiasts think, that they will use their guns to stop skyjackers at 35,000 feet, they will happen into school rooms to shoot the shooters, they will face off one on one with the invading Chinese, Muslims, Arabs and liberals, they will stand armed and ready on every corner in America to thwart the next San Berdinadino. While the reality is they want the guns to shoot unarmed animals, Mexicans and African American men in the back as they run away.  Facing off with a trained armed soldier or Swat Team? Perhaps. From under their beds crying in a puddle of phis.

To the ayatollahs of Iran and every terrorist you enable: Listen up.

You might have met our fresh-faced flower child president and his weak-kneed, Ivy League friends.

But you haven’t met America.

You haven’t met the heartland, or the people who will defend this nation with their bloody, calloused, bare hands, if that’s what it takes. You haven’t met the steelworkers and the hard-rock miners, or the swamp folks in Cajun country who can wrestle a full-grown gator out of the water.

You haven’t met the farmers, the cowboys, the loggers and the truck drivers. You don’t know the mountain men who live off the land, or the brave cops who fight the good fight in the urban war zones.

No, you’ve never met America. And you oughta pray you never do.

I’m the National Rifle Association of America, and I’m Freedom’s Safest Place.

The convention in Louisville brings to mind the problem with the NRA. We saw the videos of Police and NRA officials not allowing the press or cameras into the convention or even outside the convention. Consider also all the lobbying success the NRA has had getting congress to keep the money, computers, and datebases from the ATF and doing the not allowing the CDC or hospitials to track gun violence. It means they are spending a lot of money to hide something.  Hide what?  Two things. Hide that they if facts and statistics be known, the public would turn against them. Try to hide the ugly bigotry and celebration of violence that is the character of gun enthusiasts.
