Five councilwomen in Seattle have been receiving a lot of hate for the insidious crime of doing their jobs, but because a sports stadium is involved, the ladies are referred to as ‘the Seattle Seawards’ – and worse! I must admit, I didn’t ‘get’ the reference the first time through, but when you see the flavor of the public outcry, I think you’ll see what ‘Seaward’ stands for.
Seattle is a congested mess with horrible commutes and a substandard infrastructure. That said, when a millionaire wants to build a stadium, you’d better not stand in his way, even if he wants to dynamite THE port of Seattle. It seems to me that the location of a proposed stadium for the Sonics is more easily moved than an existing seaport. However, I’m not a sports fanatic, therefore I’m not capable of seeing reason. This is a city which felt that watching the King Dome implode was thoroughly worth the price of paying for that pile of rubble for another 15 years, so we’re not playing with a deck piled with common sense.
Because these women, who are all highly qualified professionals, voted against the stadium in the proposed location, they have been receiving a barrage of butt hurt, misogynistic hate mail. A former public defender and Superior Court judge, she has been advised to “Go home and stick her head in the oven.”
