I noticed the first example of this – the GOP talking points of the week since the bin Laden assassination – from the MODERATE REPUBLICAN David Frum on Bill Maher Friday night. It has now gone on to saturate the news cycle over the weekend.
We already know Greed is Good, and now we find that Torture is Good too! The policy and the act of it are the stuff of heroes and what American stands for. And… It is an abomination "ABOMINATION!" for the Obama administration to investigate those who have promoted, justified and directed the torture of others. This is the true nature of the Beast.
Joe Scarborough, our top voice promoting and justifying torture – who often yells, turns purple and sprays spittle into the camera lights promoting it – was quiet on this morning’s show. But only because he had the day off as his father passed. His father was not tortured.
A few questions arise that are seldom addressed on this issue.
Is it then okay for the Taliban to torture our troops?
Is it then for others to torture OUR kids and fathers and brothers?
So it is okay to torture terrorists. If a cruise missile lands on your home and blows your entire family to Kingdom Come that is terrorism. Or a drone blasting an entire wedding party, or the Marines kicking in doors shooting fathers and brothers, and raping daughters that is terrorism. And if Dick Cheney had anything to do with any of such things then we must torture him.
But you see these questions are not addressed because the concept of standing in another’s shoes is alien to Republicans. I doubt it is even possible for them as it is seems to be a genetic disposition.
If conservatives actually tried to see things from other points of view most all of their preconceived notions on politics, religion, war and death would have to be re-thought. And one thing Republicans do not do well is re-thinking. Think once and move on!
