Seth Meyers takes a break from breaking news to check in on Donald Trump’s evolving views on religion, faith and the separation of church and state. Back in the heady days of his campaign, a reporter seeking a quote from Trump about his religious faith, asked him if he ever asks forgiveness. With his trademark humility Trump replied: “Why do I have to ask for forgiveness?”
Ah, but Trump is a changed man now. He’s found his people, the prosperity gospel crowd. Trump’s mentor and spiritual guide is mega-wealthy and super-obnoxious Paula White. She’s the one who tries to talk ‘black’ to crowds of African Americans. Dear God, if you’re listening, please give Amber just ten minutes in a room alone with Paula White. You dear viewer, really have to see White in action – because there are no words to adequately describe her, except filthy rich.
To please his evangelical base, Trump wrote an executive order for the promotion of free speech and religious liberty.Seth ‘splains it all, but it sounds to me like it means less free speech and liberty for some who aren’t in the tax-free televangelist biz. You can be sure that Paula White had a hand in this, and undoubtedly Mike Pence hovered near, held aloft by his alabaster wings – and hope.
