John Oliver’s weekly show ‘Last Week Tonight,’ is instantly recognizable in part due to the unique graphics that signal the beginning of each show, but unbelievably – the American Petroleum Institute stole Oliver’s graphics to promote their climate change denial efforts! Not only is it wrong to ‘borrow’ copyright protected material but it’s confusing. Oliver raved; “You took our sh*t API, you took our sh*t! I was afraid I was going to hear 29 minutes of a rat-faced Englishman telling me sad news facts, and who wants to see that ?!” Frankly, a lot of us do.
It’s adding insult to injury for a climate change denier and major lobbyist like API to steal Last Week Tonight’s format – but it also wasn’t smart to choose this show. You see, API isn’t misinformed. They know the truth about their industry and climate change. They did the research in 1968! With this in mind, some of their ads leave a lot of room for improvement. That’s why Last Week Tonight updated those lame ads for API. Not only are the ads more honest now, but they’re 100 percent more hilarious – and it couldn’t happen to a nicer group.
