Comedian and star of screens both large and small, Aziz Ansari is a proud feminist and you are too. Oh, yes you are!
Do you think Beyonce should have the right to vote? If so, you may be a feminist. Ansari made it beautifully simple to tell if you are a feminist – or, alternately, an azzhat, via the following parable.
“You’re feminist if you go to a Jay Z and Beyoncé concert and you’re not, hmm, I feel like Beyoncé should get 23 percent less than Jay Z,” Ansari said, as the audience laughed. “Also, I don’t think Beyoncé should have the right to vote, and why is Beyoncé singing and dancing? Shouldn’t she make Jay a steak?”
Ansari further defined the word, saying “A feminist is someone who believes that men and women should have equal rights, and I feel like everyone here believes that everyone should have equal rights.” said Ansari, continuing “If you believe in equality, you should call yourself a feminist, if only to uphold the integrity of the English language.” “Because that is how words work,” he said.
Perhaps words have worked against us where feminism is concerned. It causes me physical pain to hear a woman spit out the words “I’m not a feminist!” I suspect the insulting moniker “feminzi” has insinuated itself in our national consciousness, and blended with feminism in the minds of many. Take a moment to consider the misogynistic and portly personage who has spread the idea of the feminazi.. In this case, considering the source is reason enough to reject the negative image and embrace feminism with open arms.
