Samatha Bee immerses herself in a group of Bernie Sanders supporters to understand why they’re so doggone optimistic.
These people want to be understood, and if you’re having trouble with it, they’ll gladly give you a hug. Far from a haven for millennials as you might expect, this group embodies all ages and stages of life. The common thread is optimism, because they feel that they can partner with Bernie to advance change for the people. Besides, some of these folks sport witchin’ Bernie tattoos. One hopes they aren’t as sorry as the bearer (Sam) of an ill-advised Cuchinch tattoo.
Bernie supporters face stereotypes. People tend to think they’re all young, naive or that they just want free stuff. The latter accusation has been levied on every Democratic candidate in memory. Obama won an election with this promise; ‘I’m going to give you so much free stuff you’ll get sick of raking it all in!’ I may have Obama confused with someone else, don’t quote me.
What Sanders supporters want is a livable minimum wage, universal health care and college education. Those pie in the sky ideas can’t be realized, if we want to provide the same quality of tax-free environment for large corporations.
A lot of Bernie supporters were Obama voters, and they understand the reasons Obama couldn’t accomplish all he set out to do, but they still believe in Hope and Change. The miracle is that they feel ‘people will continue to be motivated within the political process, and put pressure on our elected leaders to change…Absolutely!’
