This back and forth with Georgia Congressman Steve Livingston is a profound example of what actually separates us in the political debate. It is not so much Red and Blue, Left and Right or Rural and Urban, but smart and very stupid. And take note that when a black l guy agrees with Livingston and denies evolution he is given a free ride.
This is something I have been screeching about here for years, the tie in of evolution denial AND Climate Change denial. It is the same silly crap. What we choose to believe transcends the facts, the science, the reason and reality itself. False equivalencies the Right plays so well to their ignorant Republican Base.
There are billions of pieces of stone and bone, millions of
scientists, thousands of museums and universities that accept evolution
without reservation. And on the other side? One page of one book
written by monks in the Dark Ages, a few hundred scientists who readily admit they are religious
fundamentalists and preachers making a buck from it. But because the majority of Americans choose not to accept
evolution, they get away with pretending it is all EQUAL. Pretending is
what such people do best. Pretending gays choose to be gay, pretending black people get all the breaks, pretending Mexicans are the problem, pretending we are over taxed.
Pretending is all fine and well when it moves us to tolerance, enlightenment, non violence, love of one another and concern for others. Pretending SUCKS when its moves us to intolerance, ignorance, violence, hate of one another and concern only for our own mortality. And there lies the rub in the bastardization of American Christianity. Kick! The Religious Pages.
We suffer the same problem with Global Warming – though a far more life and death issue than the silly argument that humans once hunted dinosaurs. Smart people had to even change the name to "Climate Change" because when stupid people looked out their windows and saw snow they assumed it was the same everywhere. The collect refrain of "Bhwahahaha! Global Warming! Bhwahahahaha Al Gore!" so resounded across the land of ignorance that smart people had no choice but to change the name. For all the good it has done I have to add my own Bhwahahaha. Again the same false equivalency is applied though millions of facts, millions of scientists and common
sense makes it EQUAL to what a few hundred scientists who are paid by energy companies and Republican lobbies say.
