In this interview Gore Vidal validated a theme I have been running with for a very long time. That the Republican Party was never suppose to actually run the country, they should only act as the opposition party, which they do very well. Someone has to keep Dennis Kucinich and Bernie Sanders in check!
The only times they managed to get hold of things was through celebrity Presidential Candidates. First it was Dwight Eisenhower – who had recently won WW2 (and was not all that Republican) and Ronald Reagan who was the best 20 Mule Team Borax salesman who ever lived.
The GOP rode the coattails of our Hollywood Actor President until 2006 when they lost Congress to the Democrats. Then again in 2008 came an even more potent reputation of their basic ideology – which can be summed up as unregulated free market anarchy injected with a heavy dose of religious intolerance, guns and and faraway wars.
Where will they go, what will they do, what is the plan?
Will they go with the new faces of popular ignorance in Sarah Palin, Joe the Plumber and Exorcist Bobby Jindal? Or back to the old school of repulsive megalomaniacs who have character traits lower than the Mariana Trench with Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich and perhaps bring Tom DeLay out of mothballs? Or just hand the whole thing over to Glenn Beck and Lou Dobbs?
No matter. Gore Vidal is right, the long range future has the GOP back where it belongs, as the opposition party of NO. They held power for a generation and ran this country into the ground every which way possible.
It is not just Gore Vidal or I who understands that, it’s most everyone who doesn’t spend their free time at gun shows, gun shops or Da Range.
