Success of Australia gun control measures came after a massacre of students in 1996. And yes, those at the forefront did commit political suicide, but in the long run the country came around with massive buybacks, registration and storage plans. They did not confuse the issue with “assault rife” terminology. Instead they calmly got rid of semi automatic weapons. Like any sane country, guns were registered before that.
This means Australia is now much like a John Wayne movie. With a six gun or two and a lever action Winchester he killed dozens per movie without a problem. What’s wrong with being John Wayne? Can you imagine Chuck Connors as the Rifleman with a Bushmaster? Or Matt Dillon with an Uzi? Come on, its gone nuts out there.
It has been my contention since I began here to limit all guns to six shots. If someone can’t get the job done with six tries they are LOSERS. The problem of course is that these losers who make les than 10% of Americans need massive arsenals of military weaponry to shoot POLICE, FEDERAL AGENTS, OUR TROOPS, SCHOOL CHILDREN and large gangs of Negros hiding in their bedroom closets. And they control Congress. BELIEVE IT OR NOT. Which leads to the question of why that is.
Perhaps gun control is the wrong way to go. All that needs to be done is to follow most of the rest of the world and take the money out of elections. Become a democracy rather than an oligarchy. When things become the will of the people rather than the will of those with the most money.
So why can’t we do that? Five Republicans on the Supreme Court. And following any successes of the rest of the civilized world (like gun controls and health care) is an affront to Jesus who helped write the Constitution.
