Prompted by the bad bear encounter of a local man, intrepid reporter Julie Tremmel of WJAR in Providence, took the initiative to provide a few rather…Vivid and unusual life-saving tips for viewers. Keep in mind that the actions Tremmel is acting out come from expert advice on the topic of bear aversion and confrontation.
Somehow it all sounds much more dry and less colorful when you are reading it in a back country survival manual in black and white, than when Ms Tremmel demonstrates the methods in her own unique style, which resembles a back woods ‘Hokey Pokey’ where you wave your arms up and out and roll your eyes all about. For instance ‘Do not make or keep eye contact with a bear.’ No problem, but where are you supposed to look, and wouldn’t you capture the bear’s curiosity if you utilized Ms Tremmels method? What if bears recognize and distrust humans with shifty nervous eyes too?
It is not known if the bear species has a sense of humor, but if so, these distracting actions and expressions just might help the crankiest bear decide to let you live another day. It’s certain that Julie has a lifetime pass.
