Conan O’Brien: In an apology interview with Anderson Cooper, Clippers owner Donald Sterling might be going a tad overboard to show he’s down with African-Americans. Decked out in his festive multicultural garb, Sterling tries groveling for forgiveness.
In the recent interview with Anderson Cooper, the Clippers owner clearly wants to apologize and get this unfortunate business behind him. He did put it behind him, and then promptly sat on it. Perhaps comedian Albert Brooks said it best when he tweeted: “To Donald Sterling, As a member of humanity please don’t talk anymore.”
Perhaps you too, hoped that Donald Sterling was old news…Nothing more to report here. Well, he’s baaack! Anderson Cooper keeps a straight face as Donald Sterling attempts to make amends for his racist remarks. For the first few seconds, he is wheedling – trying way too hard to convince Anderson that he’s not a racist, Sterling lays it on the line.
“I’m apologizing and I’m asking for forgiveness, I’m not a racist.”I want to apologize and ask your forgiveness,” this took up the first five seconds…And then the real Donald Sterling took over!
By way of apology, Sterling wades further into the mire, where hip-waders won’t help him, but his big mouth is still above water level where it can clearly be heard. We should forgive Sterling, he tells us. He did it all out of jealousy (sorta like love) of his assistant V. Stiviano. Suddenly Sterling’s mea culpa veers into an attack on Magic Johnson, who “Should be ashamed of himself.” Having done “nothing for the black people” Magic is characterized in the way: “He acts so holy. He made love to every girl in every city in America.” Whoops…It looks as though the green eyed monster is not exorcised.
Before he rode off into the sunset, Sterling had attacked Cooper, a stage hand, three interns two camera men and a Peregrine Falcon.
