Forget mic drops. Donald Trump caused the jaws of a well-heeled crowd to drop, and their eyes to pop wide with horror as he launched into his rendition of “crooked Hillary” at the annual Al Smith Charity Dinner. John Oliver recounts the event, which took place the evening after the final and most rancorous presidential debate. Notables attending the annual gala have come to expect presidential candidates to trade witty, gentle jabs and engage in self deprecating humor, in the long tradition and spirit of the event. Donald Trump – who is a natural showman, if nothing else, did show – his behind. Self deprecating is not in the Trump skill set. As John Oliver observes, he is pathologically unable to admit even the slightest fault or flaw – even in jest. Evidently Trump lies to himself too. Trump assumed the boos and jeers from the normally decorous crowd, were aimed at his opponent.
While Trump’s refusal to admit defeat in the election could rock the foundations of our electoral system and democracy, John Oliver has found a clever way to help Trump emerge a ‘winner’ – even when he loses.
