Seth Meyers takes a closer look at the NRA’s presidential endorsement of Donald Trump, and Trump’s evolution from an advocate of gun regulation to a champion of rootin’ tootin’ gun rights, and favorite of Wayne LaPierre.
“If I were to run, I’d run as a Republican. They’re the dumbest group of voters in the country. They love anything on Fox News. I could lie and they’d still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific.” People Magazine 1998
How’s this for a sobering bit of prescience?
If Trump’s base cared, it’s obvious from Trump’s pre-political days, that he’s lying to them. In another quote ‘from before’ Trump expressed a sane approach to guns; “I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.” Now, Trump claims “I’m all about the second amendment!” He revs up the crowd with Charles Bronson scenarios, cocking his finger yelling “BEAK” or “PING!” Maybe HIS gun makes those noises, ya think? Oddly, for such a proponent of the safety of unfettered gun use, Trump’s properties are all gun-free zones.
It’s beginning to look as though the GOP has given up on getting Trump in line on trade and foreign policy – but that’s okay. With Wayne LaPierre at his side and in his bank account, they are winning over the frightened, the macho – with small hands, and the George Zimmermans of this country.
What a party!
