. We treat Christmas as if its always been a sacred, Christian celebration, but the historical fact is these sacred traditions have pagan roots with drunken traditions that a lot of Christians have hated for like…a thousand years.
No one hated such goings on as much as Puritans, who couldn’t abide even the church’s observations, after the church finally wedged a foot in the door in the 5th century. Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy. H. L. Mencken. Mencken may be guilty of understatement. Puritans drew a pall over America’s frozen landscape, and kept it celebration free until the 19th century. Trumpians would do well to remember the the Christmas they make much of fighting to preserve would not exist without immigrants, who jollied things up as they joined the great melting pot!
ADAM : “Treating Christmas as the birth of Jesus is a wonderful tradition. But it’s just as historically accurate to get drunk in the woods, or bang on a rich person’s door and threaten them with violence. So – instead of worrying that Christmas isn’t Christian anymore, how about letting people celebrate the way they want?”
