John Oliver reports that Egypt’s El-Sisi may be the only President who’s been offered for sale on eBay this year, but it’s no surprise considering El-Sisi’s instinct for striking the wrong clanging note time after time. Earlier this month, people were gobsmacked when El-Si Si had a $200 thousand dollar red carpet rolled out, that reached over two miles. The reason El-Sisi needed to trod the distance in luxury, was to give a speech about cutting government subsidies for water and electricity. We may have found the only man who can one-up the ‘Mission Accomplished’ banner.
While trying to impress upon Egyptian citizens, the need to cut costs, and even to donate to the government, El-Sisi joked that he would sell himself. An Egyptian – living in the US helped him make good on the offer, and listed El-Sisi on eBay as “a slightly used President.” More telling is the description; “used by the previous owners (Gulf royal families).”
Sadly the ad was taken down, although it rose to over $100 thousand dollars, which sounds like a lot, but isn’t enough to buy even one mile of red carpet.
