Seth Meyers takes a closer look at the bizarre recapture of Mexican drug lord El Chapo and actor Sean Penn’s interview with the powerful kingpin and “amigo” of Donald Trump.
The story of the Mexican drug lord has so many bizarre plot twists and surreal turns, it would be criminal if justice stood in the way of the making of a truly epic biopic. So determined is El Chapo to see the film made that phoning filmmakers and actors in large part, led to his capture.
El Chapo jokes that Donald Trump is ‘mi amigo’ and while they haven’t met, they might make good pals despite what Trump claims to think of the kingpin. The two share wealth, power, success and they are both unencumbered by modesty. Perhaps the Mexican Trump is more successful. El Chapo brags; “I supply more heroin, methamphetamine, ,cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in world. I have a fleet of submarines, planes, trucks and boats.” There are countries which do not have a fleet of submarines, and I’m pretty sure Donald Trump doesn’t have a single sub, but he is negotiating to use one of the most powerful fleets in the world.
Penn’s writing style has received criticism…You’ll want to read a passage Seth has selected for yourself, in which ‘traveler’s flatulence’ is described for our edification and amusement. Seth ties all of the weirdly wonderful aspects of this story together, and leaves me waiting for the day when – inevitably El Chapo takes up residence on the ‘outside’ again to resume his screen play. Penn’s interview with El Chapo was linked to the re-arrest of the slippery inmate, although how Penn found him for an interview and the hounds of justice were far behind, remains a mystery. For Penn’s sake
I hope El Chapo differs from Donald Trump in one important way. Trump holds grudges for a very long time!
