For those who do not remember, this is from George Wallace standing in front of the school house door with his infamous words, “Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!” Hopefully the GOP will be as immediately and profoundly wrong as George Wallace.
There seems to be three choices here about American Health Care. The Republican Plan of doing nothing at all, Obamacare which is a complicate mix of things or to follow the civilized world with Single Payer (everyone covered through a payroll tax.) It also seems that the more squawking the GOP does about Obamacare, which is their own plan pre 2009, the more it seems to point toward a Single Payer system.
Polls are hard to read on this do to how it’s worded. A universal system “like Medicare” gets 60% approval. A “single payer system like Canada” gets 40% approval. We settled on Obamacare because of our exceptialism, which the father of the Tea Party and CEO of FreedomWorks Matt Kibbe expressed so well a few weeks ago.
“Why should I have to pay taxes to support someone I don’t know?”
There you have the central political dynamic of American politics. Though the answer is “civilization,” I would like to ask Mr Kibbe and the Tea Party, “Who is it that they don’t know the most?”
The point of Single Payer is that it reduces healthcare costs by about 40% in preventative care for all, and another 20% by having everyone paying premiums, which creates enough revenue to cover those who are unable to pay. All anyone has to do is look to the rest of the world see the facts of the matter.
But we are too exceptional to look beyond our nose…
