You are not experiencing deja vu. I realize that it seems as though we’re reliving the long slog of campaigning previous to the midterms, and in our naive minds pulling the lever should have ushered in a time of relative calm
and productivity – until the next election. What a perfect world, listen to the birds chirp, the babbling brook – now snap out of it!
What we didn’t notice, was that our elected officials (or those ‘guys’ who work for us) as I prefer to think of it, have subtly changed their job descriptions.
By cleverly eliminating the expectations we’ve traditionally held for them, such as giving lip service to a few campaign promises, they’ve cleverly freed up more time for themselves. They are now able to pursue an endless cycle of fund-raising and campaigning for the next election, and the one after that. Campaign finance reform? It sounds good, but who has the time or inclination to pursue it, there’s a campaign to run!
