“If Jesus and Reagan came back today – they’d be branded ‘leftist socialists’ by the same conservatives who claim to celebrate them,” sings PsychoSuperMom, our Jewish canary in the political coal mine.
The small photo (inset) of a campaign sign caused me great distress. The author thanks God (prematurely) for ‘President Trump.’ I experienced a horrifying moment – a vision of sorts. It was not unlike the vision Jimmy Stewart experiences in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ where Stewart sees ‘good old’ Bedford Falls as it would be without him. In its place is ‘Potterville’ where poverty, meanness and unhappiness have replaced the little town where goodwill seems to blanket the town. I’ll spare you my vision of the United States of Trump.
The irony isn’t lost on any of our readers that the GOP, which holds the banners of Ronald Reagan and Jesus high aloft – aren’t even on a nodding acquaintance with the two gentlemen.
A long-haired radical with ideas of ‘gimme’ programs for the sick and hungry, and a loathing of violence (guns) wouldn’t get far in today’s Republican world. Still, the know-nothings claim that this is a Christian country and Christians are being persecuted because tactful people say ‘Happy Holidays.’ If they won’t believe the constitution, perhaps they’ll believe Saint Reagan:
“We establish no religion in this country. We command no worship. We mandate no belief, nor will we ever. Church and state are and must remain separate.” Ronald Reagan.
The song includes one of Reagan’s great and sane speeches against guns too. Maybe it’s time for the GOP to find more appropriate mascots… Mad Max and Attila the Hun are up for grabs.
