On Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, John recaps the Charleston Shooting and the true symbolism behind the high flying Confederate flag.
Back here in Sanity Land,( I just wrote about Governor Rick Perry), the heinous action of Dylann Storm Root is correctly labeled as senseless act of violence. This leaves room for ‘domestic terrorism’ too, as long as we’re throwing labels around. While Perry sees a President whose knee-jerk reaction is to start grabbing guns, John – and the rest of us see a man who is defeated by leading the most violent of the ‘advanced countries’ – if indeed we are still counted among that number.
Why then does the flag that stands for treason, racism and slavery fly high above the American flag and the state flag? Just ask Lindsey Graham, who’ll tell you, “This flag is who we are.” And that, Lindsey Graham, is exactly the point!
The only good use of the emblem, as John points out is stamped upon belt buckles, bumper stickers and tee-shirts, so we’ll immediately know which people to avoid.
John has some excellent suggestions for getting rid of the battle flag of the Confederacy. It will take a vote – and failing that, perhaps concerned citizens can help beautify America on a grassroots level?
