John Oliver learned of the “Turner Doomsday Video” which was produced by CNN, to be broadcast when the world is ending. By the way, this is really ‘a thing.’ CNN was prepared in those days. The modern CNN might require on-the-scene reporting, much as networks require someone to stand in the way of tornadoes or any other dangerous catastrophe.
The CNN video is designed to comfort us as we face our last moments on earth – but it’s not up to the challenge. The video is dull and boring, and the blurry marching band playing “Nearer My God to Thee” has long since moved on. If – like John, you aren’t convinced that this particular dirge was the last song the poor drowning wretches heard as the Titanic sank, the video will cause strife in the Celine vs “Nearer” crowd. I personally think they’re both wrong. Why wouldn’t the plucky little band play something more upbeat, like Muskrat Ramble?
Upbeat is exactly what we need, and that is why John enlisted the help of Martin Sheen. Sheen narrates John’s new and improved video, which celebrates the greatest things about humanity’s time on earth…Our triumphs, our failures, the fun times – and of course, cats: cowboy cats, bartender cats, and even floozie cats…You’ll be spellbound – but never bored.
