Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Leap Second Tonight!

On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver observes that on tonight on June 30th, scientists are adding an extra second to atomic clocks. How will you spend your extra second?  I’ll bet you hadn’t thought about it either.

Leap Second happens every three years, and is easy to forget – but as John wryly notes, “it is time that separates the men from the boys.”   We’d do well to plan how to spend our extra second in advance – because  John claims you can accomplish a lot on just one second – we’ll just see about that.

John is offering two alternatives for your Leap Second enjoyment.

So before the clock hits 11:59 and 11:60  tonight plan to be in one of the following two sites that Last Week Tonight has purchased..And I hope you have an atomic clock or you could miss the celebration. Scientists and their atomic clocks, there’s nothing wrong with a Timex.

The first is  SPENDYOURLEAPSECONDHERE.COM where you will see amazing one second videos. There is an amazing sloth clip and a so-so video of  Mariah Carey vocalizing in a cat fight – I think, and lots more!

Your other option is JOHNOLIVERSECSTAPES.COM.  Imagine the possibilities!  Perhaps you worry; ‘If we all go to that website at the same time on Tuesday night,  won’t it crash?’ No worries. .John reassures us: “It seems unlikely, nothing like that has ever famously happened before.”   Of course it has – and it was great! In June of last year, John’s net neutrality rant, so moved viewers, that  FCC servers crashed.
