Frankly, I was puzzled about Mitt Romney. His recent bout of rubbing elbows with the very sort of people he has left unemployed after corporate buy-outs always ends in a major gaffe or two, as the difference between millionaire Mitt and The People, is pointed out – inevitably by Mitt himself. In fact, his recent lecture that "Corporations are people too" may have served to separate him further from the folks at the donut shop photo-op a few weeks ago.
Rachel Maddow’s brilliant theory is that far from down-playing his obscene wealth, Mitt is letting his wealthy, self involved Thurston Howell III out and embracing him. If the name sounds familiar, Howell was the millionaire castaway on Gilligan’s Island with his wife Lovie. The Howells reveled in their wealth, jewels, and connections although money was of little use on a deserted island. Fortunately for Romney, he didn’t take a three hour boat tour and is now planning to quadruple the size of his $12 million dollar beachfront home, as the size "is inadequate for our needs."
Rachel Maddow and Eugene Robinson review hilarious gaffes which were originally instigated as ‘gotcha’ speeches about Obama, expand on the Thurston Howell III theory, then wrap it up by casting prominent Republicans as the other characters on Gilligan’s Island. Rachel is to be congratulated. Her theory is too funny – and rings too true, not to be the real reason that Mitt has let his wealthy freak flag fly.
