Michelle Obama talks to Jimmy Fallon about her teenage daughter’s attempts to bring President Obama along on tech matters, and to protect their mother from the bad language in some of their music. Jimmy and Michelle cover a lot of territory, with Michelle’s first comment setting the tone. “You just like to see me act silly,” she remarked, referring to their “Mom Dance 2” routine. Jimmy protests, but it’s okay because, however much fun the routine appears to be – they’re having a blast. The First Lady gently ribs Jimmy about his J.Crew ‘Mom’ attire, and talk of music and parenthood naturally follow.
Sasha and Malia are no different from other teenage girls, and Michelle Obama is a great and funny storyteller. It’s clear that she dearly loves her frustrating girls. By the way, all girls are frustrating in their teens, but it helps to have a terrific sense of humor and to be a step ahead of them, as the First Parents clearly are. Like other girls their age, the girls are convinced that their bright, accomplished parents are hopeless. Mercy, what chance do the rest of us have?!
Even he President of the United States is not safe from teenage snark. The First Lady illustrates the point with a story from a recent family dinner, in which the girls tried to clue the POTUS in on the concept of group chat. Failing, Malia proclaimed: “Oh dad, you’re so…Detached.”
Michelle strongly advises Jimmy to ‘hold onto’ this time in his young children’s lives, explaining wistfully,: “you’re still in the good stages, they still like you now, so hold onto that.”
