On @Midnight, Chris Hardwick invites comedians to think of alternative designs that would delight many and anger the conservative activist who attacked Starbucks new holiday cups, claiming the 2015 design declares ‘war on Christmas.’ The activist effectively launched a social media grab for himself, and a right wing media brouhaha over nothing, I tell ya!
Comedians Judah Friedlander, Brendon Walsh and Jen Kirkman created some visual images sure to strike a warm glow in the hearts of such Christmas warriors as Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly. In the main, they do a delightful job of countering the very big non-issue that we will be hearing about until next holiday season.
Of course every tweet inspires a media frenzy. Even Donald Trump weighed in, promising (or threatening): “If I become president, we’re all going to be saying Merry Christmas again, that I can tell you. That I can tell you.”
ALL of us – really?! My Jewish friends and Muslim in-laws will be thrilled to get that memo.
By the way, if your friend who watches FOX calls, tell him or her that Starbucks has used a red cup bearing a distinct and different winter-themed design every holiday season since 1997. In past years cups have featured designs such as minimalist snowflakes, a hand-drawn reindeer, a winking snowman and decorative ornaments. The controversial holiday cup design for 2015 has been praised for its minimalist simplicity featuring: an ombre that ranges from the bright red of a poinsettia to dark cranberry. It was thought that customers would enjoy having room to draw their own designs or doodle on the festive background. In no way is the cup intended to be the official battle insignia of the ‘war on Christmas.’ Oh, and New Years is coming, maybe resolve to change your phone number?
