The Ministry of Silly Walks in Ørje, Norway has erected a new sign requiring that all pedestrians crossing the street do so while using a silly walk, in the style of the Monty Python ‘Silly Walks’ skit famously performed by long-legged Python John Cleese. As you can see, the request has been met with enthusiasm by most everyone including the Mayor, it’s almost as much fun to watch onlookers enjoying the show, as it is to watch those performing the ‘silly walks.’ In fact most are suspiciously adept, as if they’ve been practicing the silly form of locomotion for some time!
Alas, the ‘Authorities’ at Buzz Kill Central are heedless to public morale – and perhaps even safety. They claim the sign is illegal and must be eliminated one day. One might argue in favor of keeping the signs due to their usefulness as a safety precaution. Placing these signs where pedestrians are at the most risk, assures that drivers will be much more attentive as they approach the crossing. We in the U.S. might want to take this unique strategy under serious consideration.
