LA Mayor Eric Garcetti and NY Mayor Bill de Blasio made a wager on the outcome of the Stanley Cup Finals. The bet was if the Kings lost, Mayor Garcetti would have to sing “New York, New York” on the Jimmy Kimmel show, and if the Rangers lost, Mayor de Blasio would sing “I Love LA” on the show. As you can see, the Kings won – and Mayor Garcetti stopped by to enjoy Mayor de Blasio’s lovely singing voice.
Fortunately Mayor de Blasio brought some musical friends along to back him up. The talented kids from the 52nd Street Project in Manhattan actually ‘sell’ the song as if they mean it, a striking contrast to the Mayor who only smiled when the grim duty was over.
As you can see, the Stanley Cup is prominently centered onstage. It turns out there are many things you cannot do when it’s your turn to enjoy the cup. It comes with a keeper whose job it is to travel the world making sure the cup comes to no harm while in the possession of rowdy hockey hunks. He’s climbed mountains to guard the prize, so tonight is relatively easy duty. One thing you can do, is make a giant Margarita in the cup, which players Justin Williams and Alec Martinez do with Guillarmo’s expert guidance. You have to wonder how Guillermo knows exactly how to make a Stanley Cup size Margarita, but he’s not saying!
