Remember when healthcare and websites used to be yawn-inducing? Not anymore! The rocky beginning of Healthcare.gov has been the stuff of fantasy and real news for weeks, but the bigger story is much more than a website roll-out with programming glitches.
Obamacare has fought for existence. First it had to overcome a political process that batted down the idea of just expanding Medicare – then freaked out at the prospect of a “public option” in the mix. We’re now left with a combination of government and the almighty and unsinkable private sector.
It’s a step in the right direction, and when the myths are swept aside, the Affordable Care Act will provide a means to care for those who have had none. Perhaps next we can return to the sane Single Payer or extension of Medicare idea. Meantime, although we still must deal with private insurance companies, no longer can they cancel policies because of sickness or deny coverage for preexisting conditions…And that is progress too!
