Just like the innocent and the damned in “A Christmas Story” people in Ohio need to have their mouths washed out with soap – preferably Lifebuoy,! I hear it has a piquant flavor. People from Ohio simply swear more than people in any other state! Don’t blame me.
This is the conclusion of months of research by the Marchex Company.
Marchex examined over 600,000 phone calls over a 12 month period. The calls were placed by consumers to businesses across 30 industries, including cable and satellite companies, auto dealerships and pest control centers. They then scanned for curse words and matched them to the state from which the calls were placed. Ohio triumphs, and the results are going viral this week! Let’s see how other states stacked up.
States most likely to swear – in order, are 1. Ohio, 2. Maryland and 3. New Jersey.
Those least likely to swear are: 1. Washington (WTF?) 2. Massachusetts and 3.Arizona.
Manners Count too!
Additional research shows that not only do residents of the Buckeye state have foul mouths, but they are among the least likely to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ How did our least and most courteous states line up? If you’re not mentioned, you can see how your state stacks up in this article from ‘Today.’
MOST Courteous States : 1.SC, 2.NC, 3. MO, 4.LA, 5.GA – (that famous Southern charm)
LEAST Courteous States: 1.WI, 2.MA, 3. IN, 4.TN, 5.OH – Hangin’ in there Ohio!
This has been a surprising study all round. Some of you will be astonished that you swear more than Jersey, others, like myself – wonder if there is yet another Washington state, where the water and the language is less salty!
What do you think of the findings? Do they stack up to your observations, or do you believe that their research flawed? Perhaps you’d like to nominate another state?
