Friends of slain Navy Seal Glen Doherty have been recounting the bizarre behavior of Mitt Romney when he met the veteran Navy Seal who was killed last month in the attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. To hear Romney using Glen Doherty’s name in his campaign to great emotional effect, you’d believe that the two had bonded at a holiday party. Good friend of Doherty, Elf Ellefsen recalls the story.
“He said it was very comical,” said Ellefsen. “Mitt Romney approached him ultimately four times, using this private gathering as a political venture to further his image. He kept introducing himself as Mitt Romney, a political figure. The same introduction, the same opening line. Glen believed it to be very insincere and stale.” “He said it was pathetic and comical to have the same person come up to you within only a half hour, have this person reintroduce himself to you, having absolutely no idea whatsoever that he just did this 20 minutes ago, and did not even recognize Glen’s face.”
The importance of the odd meeting becomes clear in light of the fact that Doherty’s mother recently asked Romney to cease and desist using her son’s name for political gain. “I don’t trust Romney. He shouldn’t make my son’s death part of his political agenda. It’s wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama.” As of the following day Romney was still using the heart-wrenching story, against Mrs. Doherty’s wishes.
The statement from Romney’s spokesman is full of irony in light of the story Doherty’s friends told of the odd meeting. Romney’s spokesman claimed “Governor Romney was inspired by the memory of meeting Glen Doherty and shared his story and that
memory.” Unfortunately, Romney wasn’t” inspired” enough to have a memory of meeting Glen Doherty until long after the fact!
