Seth Meyers takes ‘a closer look’ at Republican presidential candidate’s responses to calls for gun control after the mass shooting in Roseburg, Oregon.
Jeb Bush got out ahead of his competition, saying “stuff happens.” Did we unfairly rush to judge Jeb, perhaps we need to hear his full remark in context? When Seth plays the remark in its entirety, he remarks; ” Jeb wasn’t callously shrugging off the shooting, he was just saying it’s important for government not to do anything.” Jeb brushed off opportunities to save face later, asking; ‘Was stuff happens a mistake? Explain what I said that was wrong – things happen all the time.” So, “Stuff and things” aren’t your strong suit, Jeb.
After all, Jeb feels we’re headed for anarchy if government reacts to every little thing with a law. He illustrated the point beautifully. Jeb pointed out that when someone drowns, we don’t sign laws making it mandatory to build fences around swimming pools. Jeb (oddly) claims such an action “Would make it harder for our economy to grow, make it harder to protect liberty.”
Liberty or no – guess who signed a law making it mandatory to put a fence around swimming pools in Florida? I guess Jeb’s not good with ‘stuff, things’ or memory.
Jeb’s competition is clinging to the ‘crazy’ defense as a reason not to put teeth in gun laws. Mike Huckabee and Carson are big advocates, despite statistics to the contrary. * See John Oliver’s ‘Mental Health” from last night. The party line is so strong that Chris Christie deflected a statement congratulating him that stricter gun laws in New Jersey have proven to have a direct correlation with fewer gun deaths.
Seth’s talkin’ crazy – wanting to have the government research the causes of gun violence. It’s crazy because the NRA has convinced Congress (who works for us) to ban research, which would prove that the more guns you have, the more gun deaths you have. We lag behind other countries in education, standard of living and until recently health care – but in gun deaths, we’ve left them all in the dust!
Oddly, candidates bragged after the tragedy, seen here, Donald Trump is pictured bragging about his license to carry. Says Seth; “Just when you thought Trump 2016 couldn’t get any gnarlier, he has a gun – and a case of the crazies!”
