I have a complaint about whoever directed 12 YEARS A SLAVE. Which is the same complaint I had last year with whoever directed LINCOLN.
Cinematic darkness. Whether it is dark shadowy rooms full of politicians in dark clothes or extreme closeups of African Americans in the dark being tortured or having sex. I find both not only causing me to be unable to see what’s going on, but it’s depressing as Hell.
We need to make our slavery movies more upbeat. More fields of flowers, more dancing in white chiffon, more songs, more colorful jokes. Come on, let’s have fun with it.
