My congressman, Steve Stockman startled us all the other day when he missed the deadline to submit papers to run again for his congressional seat here outside Houston. Instead he registered to run for the Senate against Senator John Cornyn who he described as a “liberal.” Why has Stockman given up his congressional seat for a long shot to take on the 2nd ranking Republican in the Senate and who is also 2nd only to Texas Tea Party Ted Cruz as the most conservative Senator in that body?
On the surface it would seem simple. Steve Stockman watched how easy it was for Tea Party Ted Cruz to come out of nowhere to handily beat the GOP establishment conservative front runner David Dewhurst in the Texas Primaries. Stockman figures he can do the same. [Dewhurst learned his lesson and is now running for Lt Governor in a crowded field who are all sponsoring “bring your assault rifle” rallies across Texas.]
Steve Stockman is a few steps beyond even the Tea Party ugly as the congressional voice for the militia movement and being best pals with Ted Nugent.
“Obama’s a piece of sht, and I told him to suck on my machine gun. I think that Barack Hussein Obama should be put in jail. It is clear he’s a communist.” Ted Nugent Draft Dodger
Couple his Texas militia credentials with there being no chance in Hell of any Democrat beating any Republican in any Senate race in Texas and it seems attainable for Stockman just as it was for Ted Cruz.
But there are roadblocks Stockman has to get trough to make it to the Senate that Ted Cruz did not have to deal with.
First off Stockman does not have the channeling of Joe McCarthy charisma that makes Cruz so attractive in Texas. Steve Stockman is more of the Tim McVeigh sort of guy.
Secondly John Cornyn is a sitting Senator of high respect, who already has amassed $7 million in his campaign chest compared to Stockman’s $35,000.
Third is that most everyone in Texas knows Steve Stockman is an moron and nutjob. Of course that means like any moron and nutjob he can win a general election in Texas easy enough, but a primary against a sitting popular, conservative, establishment Senator who can bury him in television ads is another thing.
But it is the fourth issue that seems to be the crux of all this. Steve Stockman is a crook and it’s catching up with him. With his days numbered in the House as more and more of his gaming the system in campaign money, and flat out refusing to produce his financial records he realizes he may soon be censured or thrown out of the House. And of course with all that hanging over his head, he is aware that he could lose a primary challenge to either Bevis and Butthead.
Here is a graphic that helps define the crook index of Steve Stockman. The Nutjob criteria on this fellow is so ubiquitous and easy to find I leave that up to your. Here is the rundown from the Houston Chronicle on Stockman’s finances.
