John Oliver’s main story examines Republican alternatives to Obamacare, which they vowed to dismantle on the first day of Trump’s presidency. High on campaign rally endorphins,Trump promised full coverage for everybody – and further stated that it would all be paid for by the government…Hip hip hooray! Trump hadn’t yet consulted with Paul Ryan or the other Republicans whose sketchy plans are far from Trump’s vow that the American people “can have everything!”
While some Americans first greeted the ACA as the first step leading to communism and Marxism, and the downfall of civilization, Republicans are learning that at least 20 million folks have become rather attached to having health care. Republicans who are facing down constituents in Town Halls are learning quickly that a flawed Obamacare is preferable to the paternalistic pat on the head Republicans are passing off. Watch as a representative tells a group that the ACA must go for their own good, because ‘everyone over 74 must go before a death panel – Oh yes they will!’ When bullcookies are called on this pompous ass; “settle down children” and claims that only he read the law, and they surely did not – fails to win the crowd over.
More diabolical than the standard Republican lies, are the programs Paul Ryan plans to push through. John reviews the big three: Refundable Tax Credits, Health Savings Accounts and Block Grants. The conclusion for all three is the same: “A plan like this covers your health insurance the way a thong covers your dad’s ass, and there’s something fundamentally wrong about that. ”
