On Late Night, Seth Meyers explains the Greek financial disaster in this humorous, concise, and oddly compelling update. For all of our problems in the United States, the bright side is we are not on austerity measures handed down by a judgmental Germany. That is the future Greece faces, after borrowing from Germany, then spending that money on German cars and frippery, while the Germans did not reciprocate by purchasing – whatever the Greek were selling. The Germans think the Greek are lazy, and the Greek may well think the Germans are heartless. If ever there were two countries which personify ‘The Odd Couple’ it has to be this pair; one a sunny island that invites you to relax, the other an industrious, ambitious titan that tells you to get up and ‘DO Something!’
After bitter negotiations Greece was told “This is a horse, and either you get on it, or it’s dead!” With 60% unemployment, it’s going to be tough to pay back the $400 billion Euro debt.
Seth tells Germany some home truths about forgiveness, and reminds them of a time when their debt was forgiven by the allies. They needn’t completely forgive the debt, but perhaps there are ways to make the deal more reasonable. As Seth reminds them “It’s only money” and we do have Greece to thank for so very many things, including democracy, Zeus, Gyros, Big Fat Weddings and Yanni. Yanni? At this juncture I have to ask, what’s your point, Seth?
