What could be better than John Oliver and Cookie Monster as co-anchors of a news broadcast about words?! The one-time news show is in support of “Sesame Street’s” newest vocabulary resource “Words are Here, There and Everywhere.”
The Sesame Workshop has teamed with Mashable to present the world of words to families in a way that’s fun and entertaining.
Watch as Cookie Monster and John Oliver tackle The W-ord Report. They bring up tricky questions. Here’s a tricky one. Why are some letters so sneaky? We’re speaking of the letters which you see but don’t hear, like the ‘b’ in comb, for instance..It seems rather sneaky for the ‘b’ to just sit there on the end of the word, don’t you agree? Other letters have simply gone missing, leaving the word with an entirely different meaning – what’s the meaning of that, I ask you?
Al Roker brings us the Vocabucast. Perhaps you’ve noticed new words creeping into the vocabulary at a fast pace. Unfortunately we lost Al when a difference of opinion over the pronunciation of ‘Gif’ occurred. There are perfectly good arguments for each way of pronouncing this word. Perhaps this should become a weekly newscast!
We join together with John to beg people – and you know who you are, to please literally stop using the word ‘literally’ unless it is truly an appropriate place for the word literally – please? I might add the same for ‘awesome’ The Grand Canyon is awesome. A new stick of gum – ain’t.
A very funny out-take video of Cookie Monster, John Oliver and friends, resulted from this effort. check it out here.
