While this one would appeal more to Independents.
Billed as the war between Meteorologists and Climatologists this funny debate brings to mind one of the central dynamics of American culture.
Stephen Colbert has done a good job with this. On the surface we see an obnoxious animated dimbulb up against the calm learned scientist. Colbert fans understand the point being made. But played in Peoria this is… well… A no brainer.
This issue goes beyond politics – though far more prevalent in the Republican Base – with the majority of Americans siding with the dumbass over the a smartass. I am sure if a poll were taken today, Sarah Palin would win 2 to 1 over Al Gore.
Anyone we perceive smarter than we are is not only suspect but reviled as those you do not want to meet at Porkies to do beer and flaming shots with. [always do flaming shots immediately before the rim heats up causing it to burn your lip, jerk your hand and burn all hair off your face].
Al Gore talks down to me! I hate that uppity Negro in the White House! He thinks he’s so smart! Those damn smartypants Hollywood writers! Those New York Elitists! Those Ivory Tower professors! Those brown nosers getting As! Those lying environmental scientists! Those friggin know-it-alls! Those Marxist intellectuals! Those damn Do-Gooders! Smart people got no business to live…
You may laugh at this but the proof is in the pudding. Ronald Reagan, Dan Quayle, George W Bush, Sarah Palin, Senator Inofe, Joe the Plumber, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Chuck Norris… All of whom even the most barefoot of Oklahoma crackers know they are smarter than.
