Buddhist vegetarian Jacky Tran is in Harris County jail for beating his 3 year old son close to death because demons had invaded the boy after he had eaten meat. The boy’s mother, Phung Tran, who was caught during the arrest of her husband trying to clean the child in the bathtub also said their were demons in the child. She too is in jail. For too long Buddhists have been left out of Christian child beating culture based upon Bible passages and demon possession. Though Andrea Yates is the most well known because she drowned 5 all at once, down here around Dumbutt we have endless onezees and twozees of this sort that do not get national press.
And of course the Channelview mother who hacked off the arms and legs or two of her toddlers with an ax because the Bible told her to.
Our most recent was a Galveston father who beat his 2 year daughter to death during a discipline session in which she failed to call him SIR enough times.
I am unclear whether forcing your children to call everyone SIR is a matter of Texas Family Values or Christian Family Values.
Having lived down here now for 30 years I always assumed it was just a matter of the person being dropped on their heads too often when they were children, but after this case in Galveston perhaps the droppings are intentional.
Buddhists have had a free ride in the game of religious intolerance and violence for far too long. It is good to see them finally make the grade coming up to par with the rest of the worlds great religions.
