Disparity of wealth creates violence, addiction and heart disease, Kristof

A great column telling us what GOOD people already knew with a long list of facts to prove it true. Our ever growing economic unfairness is what causes America to have the highest crime rates, violence, people in prison, executions, addiction and various health issues. Something Republicans could care less about as it is at odds with the very essence of everything they stand for, handing over ALL the cake to the wealthy who support them. The religious intolerance and racial, ethnic and sexual bigotry are of course proudly trumpeted, but secondary, and mostly to make their ignorant voting base happy. You now having the wealthy given massive tax breaks in times of war was once considered not only unAmerican, but treasonous and seditious.

This is well worth the read.

Equality, a True Soul Food
By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF

John Steinbeck observed that “a sad soul can kill you quicker, far quicker, than a germ.”

That insight, now confirmed by epidemiological studies, is worth bearing in mind at a time of such polarizing inequality that the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans possess a greater collective net worth than the bottom 90 percent.

There’s growing evidence that the toll of our stunning inequality is not just economic but also is a melancholy of the soul. The upshot appears to be high rates of violent crime, high narcotics use, high teenage birthrates and even high rates of heart disease.
