Someone else won the Miss America crown, but the most memorable contestant was second place winner Alyse Eady from Arkansas. The vision in red sequins won the hearts of cowboys and viewers alike with her unique rendition of "I want to be a cowboy’s sweetheart."
The winner,Teresa Scanlan from Nebraska played ‘White Water Chopsticks’ on the piano – a more traditional choice, if not as colorful. Mamas don’t discourage your daughters from their own unique talents if they have pageant aspirations. Whether they throw their voice while singing and yodeling,twirl plates on poles (another Ed Sullivan lost art) or juggle flaming batons while reciting classical poetry, the audience loves an original…Or at least someone who isn’t afraid to break from the norm with a couple of dummies.
