I got up early for the 7am early voting down here in Dumbutt, Texas. I voted in the morning darkness because early voting days and locations have been reduced this year causing much longer lines and wait times.
I had two loud old farts ahead of me, upper middle class. Their wives later skipped in which I kindly made room for. They all had their picture IDs out and were talking about how that if SOME PEOPLE can’t get a picture ID then they are not smart enough to vote. I let that one pass. There are no SOME PEOPLE in my area so it was not offensive to anyone.
They then began loudly discussing how SOME PEOPLE should have to pass a little test before they can vote. You know, SOME PEOPLE just don’t know enough to vote. Just a few simple questions mind you. They looked around as if they said something profound and were begging for comment.
I complied. “Who do you think should pick the questions.” I asked.
Seems they hadn’t thought that through and their brains cramped for an answer so I saved them trouble by agreeing with them.
“Well I think you got something there!” They smiled, I was one of them, I was not SOME PEOPLE!
“I am all for a little poll test as long as one of the questions is ‘Where was the President of the United States born.’ Which as you know would disqualify 67% of the Republican base from voting.” They turned away, flushed purple and disengaged. I had ruined their voting day.
Here in Texas where over 80% of white people are part of the Republican Base, they so seldom manage to get out of their bubble, they have no training or experience in thinking things out. So they just keep crawling under every intellectual hurdle they come across. Small brains and dirty knees.
