It’s merely July the 4th in Great Britain, not a day to celebrate anyone’s independence, but John Oliver thinks there are a few things we lost out on, because of our hot headed fervor to exit. John may have some points, for instance their accent is superb. Shakespeare sounds best rolling off of a British tongue, as do some truly creative swear words. John opines that we in the United States sound as if we’ve burned our tongue on hot apple pie…And that is probably a kind estimation for some of us.
In this delightfully humorous piece, John talks about typical British attire and cuisine we’ve left behind. Even meat pie has much in common with the British character according to Oliver, who says “the hard outer layer gives the impression of composure, while under the surface it’s just a hot f***ing mess!”
By the time Oliver has compared the national tendency toward pessimism under the Queen to the American streak of optimism, it begins to look as though we really should have no regrets over independence. That is John’s official position and that is where he leaves the piece. However, by next November, I hope we all aren’t begging Britain for a ‘re-do’ of our independence, just as they are pleading for a re-do of the brexit right now!
