John Oliver finds the real problem with American Politics. Gerrymandering. The 80 Tea Party Ugly members of the House are in gerrymandered districts giving them 70% of the vote, which means no matter what they do or what they say they will be re elected no matter what. They have nothing to lose by shutting down the government, badmouthing gays and women or minorities, in fact the further they go into religious intolerance, bigotry, and racism the more the become embedded in their gerrymandered districts.
What we need is some unbiased entity to redraw all the congressional districts in every state either by random geography or some semblance of reality. Hmmm… Ted Nugent!
The only reason the Republicans hold the House of Representatives is because of political gerrymandering by Republican controlled state legislatures.
I do understand that the fix to this could bode poorly for the Black Caucus, but that may be the price to pay for a functional government.
