It isn’t Newt who is the problem in all that, it is the Republican Party.
As I have said a gigamegazillion times, it is race and religion that drives Republican politics, INTO THE SEWER.
Remember when the House of Representatives was held by Democrats for 40 years straight?
That was when the GOP was the party of country club bankers who would only dwell upon destroying FDR’s New Deal and reducing their own taxes. Hell, for most of that time they could even champion Abe Lincoln and the end of slavery.
But that all changed. First in the 1960’s with the SOUTHERN STRATEGY when the racists of the South deserted the Democratic Party for the GOP. Then on January 21, 1981 when the Religious Right, Moral Majority and Jerry Falwell were allowed into the White House by a popular Hollywood actor whose hate for the government crap still resonates today. And finally 1994 when Newt Gingrich popularized the demonetization of the words LIBERAL and DEMOCRAT to finally give the Republicans the upper hand. Since then the GOP is not just bankers anymore! They have been joined in equal parts by racial and ethnic bigotry and religious intolerance. A winning trifecta of American exceptionalism!
