Seth Meyers takes a closer look at Donald Trump’s restrained first speech to Congress and the media’s absurd reaction to the possibility of a more presidential Trump. Not only was this Trump’s first address to Congress – and hopefully his last, but it was also the first time he has hired a speech writer, rehearsed the speech, and delivered it in an unremarkable tone of voice that an amnesia-stricken media cannot help but celebrate. We are talking entirely about the tone, mind you. For information on the content of Trump’s speech, you have only to scan the faces of the Democrats in the audience.
Last April when Trump delivered an address without referring to Ted Cruz as “Lying Ted,” he was roundly praised. He has set the bar that low. Then too, it was declared that Trump had finally ‘pivoted’ and become ‘presidential.’ Why the media suffers Trump amnesia is beyond my understanding. Nor can I grasp their joy and hopeful longing for Trump to click his heels and ‘become presidential.’ As Seth observes, “and maybe Lucy will let Charley Brown kick the football this time, too.”
