It seems immigration reform is coming. Republicans are doing their best to quiet their Tea Party and Arizona “nativists” to try and beat their Hispanic demographic problem. The two issues still at play are what is meant by “secure border” and how long to citizenship. The first issue is mostly crap and the GOP is going to have to give in to the NOW of it, but on the second they are at 13 years and the other side is at 5 years. A 10 year compromise?
This is the first wise move I have seen the GOP make in a very long time. 74% of Hispanics voted against them in the last election. If they can get hat down to only 61% voting against them they can win the White House. So all they need is a 13 point change in their favor. They also have the problem of would be millions of new CITIZENS voting Democratic. But if they can stretch that out to 10 years it will give them time to gain those 13 points back from them too.
And the beauty of it? They don’t have to change on anything else! Trading something that matters little for all the things that matter a lot.
