In a convoluted Robin Hood scenario, Republicans claim to be controlling the deficit by taking from the poor and giving generously to the rich. The unemployed, and those depending upon SSI or other programs, are expected to resolve the deficit by starving, while Republicans are literally giving enormous sums and a tax-free pass to wealthy corporations. The same corporations would truly make the difference if they would only pay taxes. This ‘plan’ defies all decency and logic. Okay, I’ll admit that it defies logic unless you – as a crooked congressman have your large pockets stuffed to overflowing by those very same fat cats, who are generous in their gratitude. The poor will never do nice things like that for Congressman X, the ingrates!
Enter David Beckmann, the 2010 World Prize laureate. Beckmann, an economist and Lutheran clergyman heads Bread for the World, a grassroots network that advocates for programs and legislation aimed at eradicating hunger in the United States and across the globe. Seeing that the poor are being targeted, Beckmann and several other leaders of faith-based groups, will begin a seven-day fast on Monday, encouraging other people around the country who care about the circumstances of the poor to join them. I can’t help but feel that it would be more meaningful if the Republican Congress were doing the fasting instead. See more about the Bread for the World fast and program.
